Licensing
What is the fine for not having a waterways licence?
There's no single fixed fine — the Canal & River Trust can take enforcement action against unlicensed boats and the cost varies by case, so check current guidance directly rather than relying on a quoted figure.
The Canal & River Trust doesn't publish a single flat fine for cruising without a valid licence — the exact outcome depends on the case, how long the boat's gone unlicensed, and whether it's a first instance or a repeated one. What's consistent is that CRT actively enforces licensing: unlicensed boats can be pursued for the unpaid fee plus additional charges, and in persistent cases CRT can take court action or ultimately remove the boat from the water. The safest position is simply not to test it — see whether you need a licence for a narrowboat for what's required, and check the Canal & River Trust website directly for current enforcement guidance and fee rates rather than a secondhand figure. Once the licence is sorted, the better job is the name itself — see our canal boat gifts.
